Mountain Biking and SkiingHiking & Mountain Sports
Vancouver Island's lush landscape of tall trees, mountains, clear rivers, and endless shorelines are a hiker's paradise. A short drive north to Campbell River brings you to an easy forest hike to see Elk Falls plunge 25 metres into the upper canyon of the Campbell River. The extensive network of short trails in the area can also bring you farther down along the Canyon View Trail, and the Quinsam River fish hatchery is close by, both great places to spot the many salmon that spawn in the river each year.

For hikes into the surrounding mountains, check out Strathcona Provincial Park. Easy access starts at Paradise Meadows on Mount Washington, where boardwalks circle scenic alpine lakes and snow-capped peaks surround you.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort is also a great destination for mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides in the summer, and skiing and snowboarding in winter, often boasting the deepest snow base in Canada. Alpine skiers and boarders can enjoy lift access to alpine terrain for all levels of experience, and there are miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiers and snowshoeing. A variety of tour and rental companies are available, whether you would like to check out the ocean in a large covered cruiser, a fast-moving zodiac, or a sea kayak.

Nature Walk
Salmon Point is very lucky to be a trailhead for the Oyster River Nature Walk. It is one of the area's most popular trails. It is a beautiful, 4km round trip walk that is known fondlly by locals as "The pub to pub walk" with Salmon Point Marine Pub on this end and the local historic Fisherman's Lodge at the other. The trail is rated easy to moderate and travels along the ocean past marshland and farmlands to the Oyster River, where it then winds its way along the river through the forest.
